Autism & Education

Autism is a neurological disorder that impairs brain development effecting social interaction and communication. Children with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social relatedness, and play skills. The symptoms and characteristics of autism can present themselves along a spectrum, ranging from mild to severe.

The present rate of diagnosed autism has increased to 1 in 150, making autism the third most common developmental disability.

Research has shown that children with autism can make significant gains in every area of development utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis. A significant number of children with autism receiving early intervention can achieve full inclusion in regular education settings. While the most dramatic results are usually seen when intervention begins early, meaningful gains occur in children with autism at all ages and levels of ability, serving to increase a child's independence and enhancing a family's quality of life.
